Pug, Pugs...So, you saw the movie Men in Black.

You think Frank the Pug is so cute. You are in the market for a dog. You don’t want just any kind of dog. You want a purebreed, a Pug. Is this breed a good fit for you? Would it fit into your life style? You don’t know an awful lot about the breed. You want to learn more.

You do your research. You discover that these "little clowns of the dog world" are one of the oldest dog breeds. They have been around for thousands of years. In fact, their origin dates back to the time of Christ.

Mopsi, Carline, and Lo-Chiang-sze are only a few of the names for these little dogs. They are the largest of the toy breed. Many people think that Pugs are cute. But, is this the right pet for you?

Do you want a pet with a lot of personality- a pet that loves unconditionally? Do you want a real charmer? Do you keep seeing a friendly, roly-poly shape with big globe-like eyes, a pushed in nose, and wrinkles galore?

Pug owners are real dog lovers. This toy breed is a lot of dog in a small compact body. It doesn't matter if you live in an apartment or a house with a large back yard. They need very little room. They can live almost anywhere as long as it's indoors. They are not outdoors dogs.

Bred as companions, they are content to love their owners. They only want love in return. They want to be in the "thick of things". They follow their owners everywhere. Wanting to be near at all times, they are loyal pets. The worse thing an owner can do is to ignore them.

They love people. They are very social animals. They enjoy car rides. Although a little too big to serve as a lap dog, they always want to cuddle and be held.

The Pug is a very intelligent animal. When you talk to him, he looks directly at you, cocking his little head to one side as if he is really listening to you. And, he really is. He will stand facing you proudly, eyes focused only on you. You can tell him your darkest secrets. He will never betray your trust

This little dog has a bright cheerful disposition. If he does something that makes you laugh, he will do it again and again. He wants to make you happy. He is so funny at times that you cannot help but laugh. Thus, the term ”little clowns of the dog world”.

He is small in statue, but he has a lot of heart. He is an excellent watchdog. If a stranger approaches, he will be on his feet. And, if a friend approaches, he will stand at the door as a welcoming party of one – waving his little tail and making funny little noises.

Pugs are very good with children and other pets. They are not aggressive. They almost never start fights, but are not one to run away from one either.

They are gentle pets. They need toys, a comfortable bed, enough food, and its owner. They like to be notice and will do anything to get your attention. They are always looking for things that they can get away with. They love to play and find things to chew on. They are easily bored.

They are not hot weather, out doors types. Some can swim, but most cannot. If you take your pet near the water, make sure he is wearing a life jacket.

They have no “doggy odor” either. They only need occasional bathing. Although his coat is short, they shed a lot. Control the shedding with a few minutes brushing, daily.

They makes a lot of noise when they sleep. They snore loudly. If the breathing is regular, the snore is a perfect healthy sound. This is annoying to many people. It’s music to a real pug lover’s ears.

They can also overeat, become obese and a real “couch potato”. They are not into exercise. Never walk a Pug farther than you are willing to carry him. He may just sit down and refuse to go farther. And, You may have to carry him.

Some exercise helps to keep him healthy. A daily walk is one way to accomplish this. If you live in a warm climate, exercise either early in the morning or very late in the evening. It’s always a good idea to carry some water.

They love routine. Do not start anything that you do not wish to continue. If you take them for a morning walk, they come to expect it. If you brush them daily, they look forward to it.

They live to please their families. If you want a happy dog, then let him know what you expect of him. Establish a schedule and stick to it. Both you and your Pug will be happier.
